Cardinal Branda Castiglioni
Branda Castiglioni was born in Milan in 1350 and died in Castiglione Olona in 1443. He was a humanist and a protector of arts and was nominated cardinale in 1411.
Friend of famous people and important clerical personalities, he took part in the councils of Pisa, Costance and Basle, trying to re-establish the unit of the church of which he was a skilled diplomat.
He was an elector of Pope Martino V, from whom he obtained privileges for himself and his family.
Maecenas of artists, he liked literature, music and art. He supplied his village with a school, a library, churches and palaces.
He was magnificent and generous with the people. Still today he is widely famous in Europe, since he founded important universities, like the one of Buda and Comen.
